DETAILS:
As
with many large Synagogues, services outside the High Holy days
are severely depleted of worshipers, and the two-storey internal
space feels empty and uninspiring.
STF devised a lightweight roofing system internally, proposing
decorated fabric stretched across curved aluminium sections,
which hinged down from a service-spine housing lighting and
air-handling facilities. In the open position the building could
operate as it does currently, seating over 800 men on the ground
floor, and 500 ladies in the gallery. In the closed position,
the men and women share the 836 ground floor seats, with the
mechitsa dividing them into separate areas. |
