Lubavitch Children’s Centre

1 Northfield Road, London N16
1107A LCC
A partnership development in Stamford Hill between Lubavitch Foundation and LB Hackney, this 2-floor government-sponsored initiative provides 25 nursery places for local children, together with other family facilities.  A community library occupies the second floor, and the top floor is dedicated to community training facilities.

The original semi-detached house adjacent to the existing school was replaced by the new building, which is sensitively designed to effect the transition between the ’50s modern school structure and the 1900s adjacent Victorian housing.

The grey brickwork of the school is echoed in the new building, and the angled wood-clad projecting bay with its brightly coloured glazing acts as a beacon to visitors up and down Northfield Road.

Completed in 2009, the building was formally opened by the former Chief Rabbi, Lord Dr Jonathan Sacks.

The building was nominated for a 2010 Hackney Design Award.
